Field guide / Refining

Crude becomes a product mix.

Understand the link between a barrel of feedstock, the products it makes and the assumptions behind a margin.

A refinery is a system

Separation, conversion and treatment change crude into usable products. Feed quality, equipment, operating limits and the market for each product shape the result. One universal yield cannot represent every refinery.

A transparent teaching model

Our Refinery Margin Lab uses three fictional output shares that add to 100%. Their weighted product value is reduced by crude purchase and variable processing cost. It shows how a margin responds when one input changes.

Where the simplification matters

Real refineries can produce more product volume than the crude volume they take in because the outputs have different densities. The lab omits that processing gain, other feedstocks, fixed costs and operating constraints. Its result is a simple teaching contribution.

Keep sensitivity separate from a plan

Change one product price, yield or cost while holding the others constant. Compare the result with the original case. A refinery operating decision needs an actual assay, operating data, product specifications and a validated model.
